TRAINING BREAKDOWN

“What is the mortar holding your pyramid together?”

By Emma O’Toole

Hello, I hope you’re having a great weekend!

Last week we began to delve into the notion of: it isn’t about training more or harder, it’s about doing what you’re doing, only better.

We kicked things off with mindset and how a runner/cyclist’s training pyramid might look, what can happen if we ignore any of the pillars of health and wellness that occupy the base of our pyramid (think Jenga tower) and how to make the most of our time with successful planning to reduce decision fatigue.

This week we’re focusing on goal setting. It’s all well and good having a training pyramid with all the elements where they should be, but what is the mortar holding your pyramid together: Why do you run/ride?

Each one of you will be sat reading this newsletter with your own why and for me that is what is so great about our sports. The outcome can be the same, eg. to run 10 miles, to have an FTP of 200w, but our reasons why can be wildly different.

Having a solid why can help with weaning motivation and help turn the pedals over when the weather is far less inviting. What can also help hold your pyramid together is having a goal. This doesn’t have to be race/event specific, it can be habit building, time-focused amongst other things and that’s what I’m proposing with our 10-week challenge.

Introducing: ENDURANCE REVOLUTION 10 WEEK CHALLENGE.

Start date: Wednesday 23rd October 2024.

It’s just over 10 weeks until the New year, so there is no better time to start this endurance challenge than now. This time of the year is can be really challenging for runners and cyclists, but it is what you do now that will lay the foundation for your 2025.

The challenge is really simple and is designed to help you do what you’re already doing, only better.

You’ll get both 1-1 and group support to keep you motivated and focused during the 10 weeks, with each week having a different focus to help you achieve.

Pay what you think it’s worth to enter and you’re automatically entered into a raffle for you to win a gift voucher for a running and cycling retailer.

The more people you invite to our community and those who also go on to enter the challenge, the more entries you get!

  • 2x extra raffle entries for every like-minded runner, cyclists and triathlete you invite to join our community*.

  • 5x extra raffle entries if they join our community* and join the challenge!

*Community membership questions must be answered to be a successful entry.

Micro-goals:

Micro-goals help break down the bigger goal and keep us on track.

For me this quote by Don Lancaster best sums this up:

“Most impossible goals can be met simply by breaking them down into bite-size chunks, writing them down, believing them and going full speed ahead as if they were routine.”

I love this quote because it recognizes the importance of mindset to make the seemingly “impossible”, “possible”.

In week 3 and week 7 of our Endurance Revolution challenge, we set micro-goals to help keep us on track, motivated, less daunted by the end goal and they can be fun- giving you a fresh new training focus that supports your overall goal!

  • They break down larger goals into smaller, achievable tasks makes them less overwhelming and easier to tackle. Think the confidence and motivation gained from running a half marathon when we’re training for a full marathon.

  • Micro-goals allow for easier monitoring of progress, helping us adjust and refine our training plan based on what is working and what is not.

  • They’re check-in points for progress and accountability. It’s our time to celebrate the progress that we have made so far, or to regain focus and get back on track if needed.

  • They help build mental resilience: Achieving micro-goals fosters a growth mindset, helping us build confidence, resilience and the ability to handle setbacks over time.

I’m excited for you to get started with this challenge and next week we’ll focus on how to plan, in detail, your training sessions to support you reaching your goal.

Have a super Sunday and get ready to strike 2025 hot!

Thank you!

Emma x
